(The Second International Conference of Bridges between Logic, Ethics and Social Sciences,简称BLESS 2025)在山西太原迎泽宾馆举行。

Knowing On-Topic:A Reconsideration on Sensitivity, Safety, and Closure

Junxin TAN and Hongguang WANG

Abstract. Closure qualifies us for extending our knowledge or belief by recognizing and accepting what follows from something that we have already held. As an intuitive principle, it has been argued that an advantage the safety account over the sensitivity account is that the safety account is compatible with epistemic closure. Inspired by some achievements that are related to the growing attention in philosophical logic on the role played by topic-preservation in reasoning, this paper for a significant refinement in our understanding of epistemic and doxastic closure by incorporating the notion of topicality through topic-sensitivity intentional modals (TSIMs) proposed by Berto (2022). The alignment of conditional belief TSIM with AGM postulates provides a stable ground for arguing that safe beliefs, when processed through topic-preserving inferences under believed implication, can yield further safe beliefs, which may offer a more reasonable model of how rational agents extend their cognitive states through reasoning. In a nutshell, it is crucial for us to reason on-topic.

Keywords. Closure; Topicality; Safety; Conditional Belief
